How to Get Your First 25 Google Reviews (Without Begging)
A simple, repeatable review system any local business can run — no apps, no spam, no awkward asks.
Reviews are the cheapest local SEO lever
A business with 50+ reviews averaging 4.7 stars will beat a competitor with a prettier website and 4 reviews — every single time. Reviews influence rank in the local pack and they're the single biggest factor in whether someone actually clicks your listing once they find it.
The 3-touch review system
- 01Touch 1 — At the job: when the customer says "thank you" or "this looks great", that's the moment. Say "Hey — would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It's a huge help for a small business like ours." That's the script. People say yes.
- 02Touch 2 — Same day text: send a short text with a direct link to your review page. Use your Google Business Profile's short link (g.page/r/...). Not your website. Not Yelp. Direct to the review form.
- 03Touch 3 — Day-3 email: if they haven't reviewed, send one polite email. After that, never ask again — pestering kills referrals.
Respond to every single review
Within 24 hours, ideally. Thank 5-star reviewers by name. For anything 3 stars or below, respond calmly, acknowledge the issue, and offer to fix it offline. Future customers read your responses more carefully than they read the reviews themselves.
What to never do
- 01Don't offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews — it's against Google's TOS and can get your profile suspended.
- 02Don't ask for "5-star reviews" — ask for honest reviews.
- 03Don't use review-gating tools that filter out bad reviews. Google catches these.
