The 10-Point Local SEO Checklist Every Service Business Needs

The exact list I run for every new client — from Google Business Profile to schema markup. Steal it and ship it this week.

Why local SEO beats paid ads for most service businesses

If you're a roofer in Greenwood or a landscaper in Whiteland, your customers are searching Google with their location built into the query — "plumber near me", "lawn care Bargersville", "emergency roof repair Indianapolis". Ranking in the local 3-pack costs you nothing per click, brings in higher-intent leads than ads, and compounds month over month.

Most local service businesses I audit are losing to weaker competitors because they've never done the basics. Here are the ten things I check first.

The 10-point checklist

  1. 01Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile — every field, real photos, accurate hours.
  2. 02Pick one primary category that matches what people search for (not what you call yourself internally).
  3. 03Make sure your business name, address, and phone (NAP) match exactly across your website, GBP, Yelp, BBB, and Facebook.
  4. 04Add LocalBusiness schema markup to your homepage with your hours, address, geo coordinates, and service area.
  5. 05Build one service page per service you offer — generic "Services" pages don't rank.
  6. 06Add city pages for your top 3 service areas with real, original content (not copy-paste with city names swapped).
  7. 07Get reviews on a consistent cadence. Aim for 1–2 new Google reviews per week, every week.
  8. 08Embed a Google Map of your office or service area on your contact page.
  9. 09Pass mobile PageSpeed of 90+. Compress images, lazy-load below the fold, ship modern formats (WebP/AVIF).
  10. 10Build local backlinks: Chamber of Commerce, local news mentions, supplier partner pages, sponsorships.

Where most businesses get stuck

Items 1–3 are free and most owners can do them in a weekend. Items 4, 5, and 9 are where templated builders like Wix and Squarespace fall short — they don't let you cleanly inject schema markup or hit the speed scores Google rewards.
